to my Prius driving friends… some thoughts you’ll enjoy.
I had an awareness today, that I unwittingly insulted a few of my best friends. Oh no! I was critical of people who might feel that by buying a smart car (hybrid), they might be inclined to shirk responsibility to fellow man in other ways… thinking they have already fulfilled service in that act alone. But, maybe my critique is slightly unfair. First, let me say that my friends do not possess that attitude I don’t think. But let’s face it, we’re all prone to that way of thinking sometimes, driving and owning a vehicle (or leasing), while our ancestors were pulling plows. And, much of our fellow man still.
I made a swipe in a recent blog post against “Prius” cars specifically. Part of my sentiment came from a recognition that a “Prius” could become an elitist and self congratulatory symbol, saving the already rich more money. Is that efficient? Honestly I can think of pros and cons. Objectionable however still, there are even some “fueling stations” in parking places that use revenue from the public electric grid, which even non-“Prius” owners would be expected to pay for by way of their home electric bills – way unfair! I was surprised by this motive of the electric company. Some corporations devise clever ways at tapping into human environmental concerns, in order to exploit and redistribute wealth. Let me use this insulting remark as a way to explain something bigger however.
First off, we live in times where we should most certainly be concerned about our Earth. Everything that we shop for, requires smart shopping and environmental impact must be a concern that every global citizen should learn, from their parents and in schools and churches. Adapting one’s wastefullness in even the smallest way, as a group, collectively will better ensure that no one goes hungry; whether we buy recycled goods, or give money to organizations who use that money wisely, with an ability to stretch each dollar in the best way it can. This is a model of the wealthy aiding the impoverished.
Most definitely, a “Prius” car emits fewer polutants into our environment than older model non hybrid vehicles. But technological advancement must be slowly integrated, according to the real economy and buying power. The “Prius” is a fine example of responsible automotive engineering. That needs to be said, and so “Prius” drivers can feel they are doing a service. They are. And I’m doing a service by not always using plastic bags at the grocery store too!
Driving a car, and choosing a particular car, using a bus or bicycle, or walking… those are all choices based on needs. Putting gas in the vehicle, is only the begining of a life of service. Interestingly enough, 3 of my good friends who have been of much moral support to me, all drive “Prius” cars! While I, drive a family sedan. In their work life, they are dedicated persons who do work with positive guiding principles to serve others, and not only themselves. They have good incomes, and their work affords them some luxury at times. I believe that is also true of me. My work provides joy to me. Some automotive luxuries unfortunately come at some cost to others who do not enjoy the same; and so we must have a sense of responsibility and gratitude too, for the technology that we have, even if we think we earned it and deserve it.
Here’s a point beyond that even; even if your choice of vehicle is the only service you consiously provide to your fellow man (by way of emission control), the good news is, that your choice comes from a giving attitude. Scripture tells us that all small deeds, matter. Moreover, even if we do not deserve the luxuries that we have… we are forgiven. Though we should not make it our quest to own and possess things or people. The important thing to remember, is that whether you drive a gas guzzling SUV, a compact “Prius”, or anything in between, one’s service to mankind does not need to stop at the gas pump. It is there that it can begin. The good news, is that even that counts for a whole lot. Even the lengths of one’s travels can be a starting point for one’s dedication and charity to others. This was not my own realization, rather words taught. Using gasoline to travel by air, sea, or land, it is good! Travel is part of our lives whether short or far. And, the even better news is, that there are oh so many ways to serve, once one find the ways that are especially carved out for each one of us. Those who never owned a vehicle ever, could be a most charitable and impactful person. So, if you own a “Prius” or something else, know that you can be of service in many ways. Not everyone owns such a car. But service is still something you can access by using your telephone, your postage stamp, your check book. That is the honor in it. But, if your unique manner of service require it, the heavenly Father will see that you have it to use.
