This Saturday and Sunday, recognizes two commemorative days which I and many others find to be personal, meaningful; and, one is of particular historical achievement.

One, is the remembrance of Germany’s reunification between the former Communist-controlled East Germany, and the free West. Germany had been divided by not only a wall, but, by two vastly different and incompatible political systems.

The removal of this heavily fortified partition, was spurned by agreement among politicians that the former East Germany was one in the same country as Western Germany. Not, merely due to its preceding border, rather also due to the new collapse of the former Soviet Union (now known as the Russian Federation).

This day remembers those who died seeking freedom, those who suffered as Germans – walled off from other German-nationals, family-members and friends kept from seeing one another, and it celebrates the reunification which had been long awaited, fought for, and finally achieved.

The other day that is commemorated, is “international day in recognition of non violence”.
