HomeEntertainmentSong Review: U2: “Zoo Station” (1991)

I hope you have read my review on the Duran Duran song this month.

To follow up on that review, this review is on U2’s “Zoo Station” (from the album “Achtung Baby”), which translates literally to “Watch Out Baby”.

Now being a US resident, we were exposed on radio, mostly to certain tracks of U2, none of which were from album “Achtung Baby” that I ever recall. But, the best album in my opinion by far made by U2, is “Achtung Baby”.

“Achtung Baby” also happens to be the first album of U2 that I ever heard. Maybe that is why it’s preferred by me among their albums – even more than “Joshua Tree”? No, I think it’s just the best album they ever made to date!

While I also own their “B-Sides” album, I assert that “Achtung Baby” is their most dynamic and most creatively spirited album!

The first track on the album, is “Zoo Station”. While it ends somewhat abruptly, it is a powerful opener to the rest of the album that you are sure to enjoy. If you’re a rock fan, yes… but also especially if you are a “Brit-pop” fan.

A fairly quick tempo song, with blend of synthetic elements, constant beat, electric guitar, and echo-effect vocals, let’s briefly examine the lyrics and message.

Focusing on time, the song comments that we all often strive to get somewhere on time. We are at times hindered from getting to the destination. At other times, we are right where we need to be.

“Ready for the laughing gas”, which might make us less aware of the element of time, we should perhaps give-in to the absolute in-probability that we can somehow contain and master time; we are all subject to its passing…. no exception to the rule.

Next stop? The zoo station. That’s pretty much how I interpret this song. It’s simple.

U2’s “Achtung Baby” is a real “gem” of an album, put out by Island Records Ltd. in 1991.

If you had a chance to learn of the news, U2 recently made a visit to Germany’s U2 line (at the subway station) in the south of Germany. The station shares the name of the band, and, the band recently performed to passerby’s at the train station. What a great way to celebrate the band’s prominence, and, to afford them the opportunity to express their gratitude to their German fans and beyond, without any expectation of financial remuneration it seems!

Check out U2’s “Achtung Baby”! You’ll like it!
