Rather than quote the musician without relevance; and rather than destroy historical artifact or monument – an archivist (including film archivist), librarian, historian, archaeologist, might tell you why these artifacts matter. I share with you, my list of the TV shows I was born about (and “raised on”). Thanks to my mom and dad. And all those who produced the works.

Those of you who know me well, understand that I often emphasize US films (narrative fiction).

But, you know, UCLA Film school in the 1990’s not only taught fiction narrative. No, it also taught foundations for documentary, sit-com, news anchoring, journalism, soap, stage, fiction, and non-fiction. While our exposure in some of theses disciplines were broad-based, the introductory courses helped each of us to quickly decide what to specialize in.

US TV should not be purely fictional programming (mostly sitcom and fiction). While some people might consider “news” to be non-fiction (it can be, but often is not) – a.k.a. “fake”, or, “propaganda” – I’m talking about the value of nature shows (documentary), science and technology, history, philosophy, religion, medicine (to name a few genres). There’s some of it out there – and quite high caliber at that. Fortunately. But, are we watching it? Many of you perhaps are, and, that’s re-assuring. And, with the Internet, we can research just about anything of curiosity – it’s quite amazing. This was something that did not exist merely a few decades ago to the same extent.

Don’t forget, that we were among the very first students who emerged deeply into the digital and internet technology (in the late 1990’s).

I’ve mentioned before, that we were in the midst of the years where the whole industry in Los Angeles began to transition from celluloid “film” (negative) to “digital tech” also. While negative can still be utilized, the digital technology is widely utilized.

Rapid technological changes, meant for swift adjustments in the learning apparatus. Especially, for the classes in both picture editing/sound editing; and mostly camera tech.

I recall one class, where we were to write down a few of our treasured movies. This was simply an exercise on one particular day, to jog our memory so that the teacher could get an idea of what influenced us when we were young. Which show or film had a significant impact on us; because that in a sense is our own personal history. And history matters. It was on one of the first days of one of my classes.

Now, today, literally 22 (approximately) years later – I remember that exact day. And, as many of us ponder the desire of many people to remove evidence of our nation’s history (including some of the most important human monuments)… many brave Americans are not allowing that to happen on their watch.

Archivists of media, are among the first to warn us that removal of historical artifact, is the first step toward a people stranding itself and closing doors to true progress. Choosing not to remember and not to maintain such artifacts in our space – are the steps taken which blur that where we now stand. We want to keep our “bridges” as visible reminders and record. So long we do not worship these artifacts, we ought to keep them. Dismissed by the collective (and not merely a few) should only be necessary if they become idols of worship by our inhabitants.

I remember TV shows that I was “raised with”. What a literal tragedy it would be, if episodes of those TV programs were never to be seen again by new students and new generations of Americans! Even foreign nations’ citizens elsewhere presumably enjoy many of them to this day also. They get a glimpse into America. And, our physical monuments provide the same to visitors from around the globe (and to our families).

Instead of re-writing or discarding my own memory (TV history), I look back to some of them fondly. And I share with you the TV shows that I was primarily “raised on”.

For proper context, there were those that I viewed with my mom; and there were those that I viewed with my dad. The reason, is that they had different work schedules for many (some) years. And, so, different programs were watched with either of them, or, both together depending on the day. So, I list these into two categories first. The 3rd category, contains programs that all 3 of us watched together on weekends.

And this programming was the beginning of many years of study on Film and Television.

Thanks Mom:
‘M.A.S.H.’
‘Different Strokes’
‘Three’s Company’
‘Family Ties’
‘Magnum P.I.’
‘Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood’

Thanks Dad:
‘The A-Team’
‘Knight Rider’
‘The Jeffersons’
‘All in the Family’
‘Who’s the Boss’
‘Silver Spoons’
‘Highway to Heaven’

Thanks to both of you:
‘Our Gang’
‘The Twilight Zone’
‘Hitchcock presents’
‘The 3 Stooges’
‘Bewitched’
‘The Andy Griffith Show’
‘I Dream of Jeannie’

Historical record is essential to knowing “where you have been and where you are going to… I wanna go with you”.
